Join us for the first event of the year as we launch the TAVROS chapter of AMAN AMAN. The exhibition at TAVROS brings together works by Larissa Araz, Vartan Avakian, Cevdet Erek, Vassos Kapantais, Marina Papazyan, Didem Pekün and Valinia Svoronou, exploring stories of movement and connection across the Aegean, Anatolia and their diasporas. An installation by Zafos Xagoraris is also presented at Tavros Solidarity School.

The opening day of AMAN AMAN in Nikaia begins at the Nikaia Cultural Centre with Angela Melitopoulos and Kerstin Schroedinger’s Industries of Denial, Stage 10: From Musa Dagh to Port Said. Later on, the evening continues with a series of events as part of AMAN AMAN's public programme, taking place at the Armenian Evangelical Church of Greece.

At the Armenian Evangelical Church of Greece, Vartan Avakian’s Waswas delves into the persistent myth of buried Armenian gold and its place in Turkey’s popular imagination, drawing on online treasure-hunting forums and the world of maps, spells, rumours and conspiracy theories. The evening continues with Chaghig Arzoumanian’s Geographies (2015), which follows the journeys of Armenians who left Lebanon and settled elsewhere, reflecting on displacement and the ways places are carried across borders.

A reading around Valinia Svoronou’s Ypsilon takes place at TAVROS. More information will be announced soon.

Performance by David Bergé presented by TAVROS as part of a benefit evening for kyklàda.press. A place where ordinary and magical realities reaffirm each other, a delightful performance where the symbolic and the empirical are not to be distinguished. In Machine Paralysis – a Fake Book Launch, David Bergé manages to deal with an area of disability studies in a way that was deadpan humorous with the right amount of seriousness. Made you want to read the book for real. Anna Bromley and Meltem Ahiska’s lecture-performance A-n-other Archive: Decentralized Simultaneities around 1964 is based on correspondence between the two contributors, bringing together different histories of migration and movement between East Germany, Turkey, Cyprus, Syria and Lebanon.

Zafos Xagoraris’ lecture-performance 2 Camps, accompanied by sound excerpts, focuses on two First World War prisoner-of-war camps in Germany: the Half-Moon Camp in Wünsdorf, where around 30,000 Arab, Indian and African prisoners were held, and the Görlitz camp, where the Fourth Corps of the Greek Army was held. Drawing on recordings made in the camps by German linguist Wilhelm Doegen, the work brings their history of captivity and the voices preserved in the archives into the present.

Join us for Common Spaces, Common Stories, where Eleni Katrini and Kyriaki Papathanassopoulou invite us on a walk through the shared spaces of Nikaia, a city shaped by the movement of people and the memories they carry with them. Drawing on their previous research in the area, they follow stories of people who arrived through different journeys and explore how their experiences meet in the city today. The walk ends at the Nikaia Cultural Centre, where the conversation opens to the public around material gathered along the way. Starting point: to be announced soon.

Angela Melitopoulos and Kerstin Schroedinger present the new chapter of the work series Industries of Denial, Stage 9: Samandağ – Antakya. Zero Surface of History at the Nikaia Cultural Centre. The work focuses on Samandağ and Antakya, bringing questions around history, displacement and the traces of the past into the present.

The evening at TAVROS begins with a discussion around multilingualism, literature and publishing initiatives, bringing together historical and contemporary examples with Natasa Lemos, Dimitris Prokos, Maik Tsilingirian and İSTASYON editions. The discussion is followed by a performance by Dimitris Prokos.

The AMAN AMAN exhibition closes with a finissage at TAVROS. More information about the event will be announced in the coming weeks.
